  • In Ontario anyone can call themselves a ‘“therapist” and a “psychotherapist” with training in mental health care (e.g., Psychologists, Registered Psychotherapists, Social Workers, Physicians, and Occupational Therapists). Compared to other professionals, psychologists go through the most rigorous training that involves the completion of a Master’s Degree and Doctoral Degree as well as extensive clinical training in the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of mental health conditions.

During graduate school, most trainees accrue more than 1,000 hours of clinical experience, 1,500 hours of experience in residency and additional clinical experience in supervised practice after which they pass licensing examinations to demonstrate their competence in trained areas.

In Ontario, the provision of a diagnosis is a controlled act and the right is reserved to Psychologists, Psychological Associates and Physicians.

Assessments

  • You might be asked to provide school report cards, bring the list of medications, and bring your reading glasses if you are wearing them on a regular basis. If the assessment is lengthy you might be reminded to bring food. If you have fidget toys or other items that you find soothing you are free to bring them with you.

  • Your assessment consists of several elements and you can cover them as they get completed rather than paying all at once.

  • Psychological evaluation is an opinion that you pay for. Unlike other services, you are not paying to argue in your favour but rather to provide an unbiased and professional opinion. If you disagree with the assessment or wish to consult with someone else, you might seek another evaluation with another professional.

  • Typically you can do another neuropsychological evaluation 12 months after your original evaluation.

Insurance & Fees

  • Yes, some cases can qualify for a reduced rate for a certain period of time. Please discuss the possibility with the clinician.
